something completely different...

Even before you arrive at Mulino Carletti, you will be aware that this is a very different holiday experience. Thanks to our new road, you can now get here on wheels – but a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. The last two kilometres of the journey are over a rough forest track, the sense of seclusion and escape grows on you as you traverse the beautiful mature chestnut woods. As you descend the last 500 metres (along our new road), the sound of the rushing water of the Segaccia will rise to meet you. When you park and walk across the wooden bridge to the millhouse, you will be shaking off 50 years of history, stepping into a quieter, calmer time…

the forgotten mill...

Mulino Carletti is an old water mill in the Appennine Alps in northern Tuscany. It is a fine stone-built house surrounded by forest. The mill was reached by a mule-track, and with changing economic factors and the adoption of motor vehicles became uneconomic in the post-war era. It ceased milling in 1954, and was abandoned in the early sixties. Like a fairy-tale princess, it lay “forgotten” for forty years, while the forest took over its arable terraces and fields.

...and its revival

Rediscovered, Mulino Carletti is being carefully and minimally brought up to date, so that its new owners can enjoy the secluded lifestyle it offers, and the mill can also be rented as a base for holiday time in the mountains. The house is large, and can accommodate small groups for courses as well as families or groups of friends wishing to explore the mountains and the treasures of Garfagnana (the local area) and Tuscany in general.
